Katherine Ann Brodniak, age 77, of Everett, Washington, passed away on April 30, 2026 with her loving family by her side.
Kathy was born on October 14, 1948 in Ames, Iowa, to her parents Betsy & Richard McCosh. She grew up in Salem, Oregon with her younger sister Bev, where they participated in Girl Scouts, music, and appreciating nature in the Oregon State Parks, where their dad worked. She attended North Salem High School, graduating on June 2, 1966. She graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a degree in Elementary Education on May 24, 1970.
Kathy met the love of her life, Lloyd, at the Mukilteo teacher’s bowling league, and they were married on February, 12, 1972 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Mukilteo. They enjoyed a wonderful life together for over 54 years. They enjoyed many similar interests in life including faith, music, theater, travel, sports, outdoor adventures, and even ordering the same meal when they went out to eat.
Their passion and love for the outdoors was evident by the happy times that they shared together volunteering at Mt. Rainier National Park and spending time at their cabin near Lake Wenatchee State Park. Together they enjoyed many summers and winters of hiking, backpacking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sailing, and visiting scenic National Parks around the United States.
They also enjoyed traveling in Europe and passed along their love of travel & outdoor adventure to their children Roger & Amy. Kathy & Lloyd celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2022 with a memorable family trip to Hawaii which brought everyone so much joy.
Kathy loved her family more than anything and one of her greatest joys was spending time with them and making special memories together. Visits with her Oregon family including many Oregon Coast adventures, plane hopping to Iowa, year-round Leavenworth fun, and making time for her grandson’s activities were a few of her favorites.
Kathy’s love and passion for teaching was evident in her 25 years at various elementary schools in Everett. Her extraordinary teaching team at Jackson Elementary held a special place in her heart.
Kathy was very strong in her faith and was a long-time active member at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Everett since 1975. She enjoyed participating in many roles within the church throughout the decades and looked forward to different social events & her dinner group evenings.
Kathy cherished spending time with her close friends over the years, including scrapbooking with her sister Bev, walking & tea time with Charlotte, gathering with the “old neighborhood gang” for annual summer picnics, and reading with her book club ladies.
Kathy also stayed in close contact with her PLU college “sisters” and enjoyed regular Zoom calls, homemade card crafting weekends, and planning annual girls trips together.
Kathy was a devoted University of Washington Huskies fan and she was able to enjoy a special trip with Roger to cheer on her favorite team to victory at the Rose Bowl in 1991. She also enjoyed cheering on her grandsons in all of their various sports. She liked to watch gymnastics and figure skating and rooted for her home teams of the Seattle Mariners & Seattle Seahawks. She experienced a special trip to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver & Whistler.
One of Kathy’s highlights during her retirement years was giving back to the community, helping others, and volunteering her time. She loved pricing sweaters and helping kids find special clothing at LUMA NW Auxilary (formerly known as Assistance League of Everett), meadow roving and identifying wildflowers at Mt. Rainier, helping prepare cross-country ski trails at Lake Wenatchee State Park, and teaching her grandsons weekly piano lessons at her house.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents Betsy & Richard McCosh and sister-in-law Caroline Brodniak. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 54 years Lloyd, son Roger (Kristyn) Brodniak, daughter Amy (Ryan) Godbersen, her four beloved grandsons Byron & Will Godbersen and Andy & Alex Brodniak, her sister Bev (Daren) Killam, and her special nephew & nieces & their families – Luke (Katie) Killam, Janet Killam, and Kris (James) Baker.
